Best Tips to Productively Work From Home
Whether you’re working from home because of the coronavirus or you’re a regular at telecommuting but you’d like a refresher, here are some of my best tips for creating a productive remote work environment. And remember, remote work requires us to get way better at time management and prioritization. See this as an opportunity to learn a new skill that will help you in your career in the long run!
TL;DR
know what you need to get done to achieve your goals
do the hard/most important things first
ENVIRONMENT
Choose a comfortable place in your house to work. The kitchen works great for me. Other people I know need a closed door. Try switching it up from the morning to the afternoon if you need to!
Work from separate rooms from your significant other or roommates if you both/all are working from home.
PRIORITIZATION
Write out your goals for the year/month/week and post them on something you can see (aka not on your computer!). I use chart paper and post-its like the former 5th Grade Teacher that I am :)
At the beginning of your day determine the TOP 3 PRIORITIES that must get done to achieve your goals
TIME MANAGEMENT
Weekly Planning
MAKE TO DO LIST OF BIG/MEDIUM/SMALL ROCKS
What are the rocks? Watch this video. At the beginning of your week, write out your list of the most important things you need to do that week (in alignment with achieving your goals). These are your big rocks. Then write out the “somewhat important” things, your medium rocks. Finally, make a list of your little things that need to get done or small rocks.
SCHEDULE ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING
Schedule out your big rocks first. Literally block off time for them on your calendar. Then schedule out all the medium rocks. Finally, your small rocks.
Daily Planning
Review your calendar at the beginning of the day
Write down your TOP 3 PRIORITIES that will directly impact your goals
Eat the Frog AKA do the hard thing that you don’t want to do FIRST
Other tips to productively work from home
Set a timer for how long you’re going to work on each ‘task’
Build in breaks for lunch, exercise, etc. throughout your day.
Feeling antsy? Get up and take a walk around the block!
Hope this is helpful! Feel free to reach out directly with any more questions <3
